Grade Level Highlights
Our elementary school curriculum is thoughtfully designed to strike a meaningful balance between engaging academic rigor, character development and fostering a joy for learning.
Beginning in Kindergarten, our teachers encourage students to take risks, even if that means experiencing failure. Part of the magic of our nurturing elementary school experience is providing a safe environment for students to cope with failure and to learn from it. We place an emphasis on teaching our students that striving for excellence as outlined in our mission statement does not mean striving for perfection but rather a commitment to doing one’s best and embracing challenges and risk taking.
Below is an overview of each of our grade levels. You will see that our classroom experiences are student-led, experiential, inquiry-based activities designed to build confidence, facilitate problem-solving and critical thinking skills, and provide a strong foundation of gratitude, passion, empathy, and a commitment to service.

Established in 1939, Carlthorp School is the oldest independent coeducational day school for grades K-6 located in Santa Monica, California.
